Birthday Girls

Two girls in our class celebrated their birthdays in November.  Both Jayden and Claire turned 9 years old this month.  Happy Birthday Girls!

Simple Machines

Over the past week and a half the students read stories about simple machines.  Also, they watched short videos on this same topic.  Then we went to the makerspace and the students built as many of the 6 simple machines that they could in the time allotted.   They used saws, hammers, hot glue, drills, etc. to build their simple machines.   After creating their simple machines they shared them with the first graders in Ms. Marzouki's class. They did an awesome job on this project.

Hmong New Year

High School Students from North High School came to our school last week to teach us about the Hmong culture.  They shared their traditional music, dances, and games with us.  They did a terrific job.

Floor Hockey

During November the students participated in a hockey unit in gym.  Below are some photographs and a short video of the students playing hockey.

Costume Parade

Our class had a lot of fun participating in the Costume Parade this past Monday.  Enjoy the photographs below.

Julian's Birthday

Julian celebrated his 9th birthday on October 30th.  Happy birthday, Julian!

What is Friction?

Some of the groups of students have started a new lesson with their lego robotics.  The tasks they are being asked to figure out are listed below.  Mrs. Greger's class has joined our class during this part of the day.  There are groups of four students working together.  There are two students from our classroom matched up with two students from Mrs. Greger's class.

Understanding Multiplication

This week the students started to learn more about multiplication.  They've learned about repeated addition, arrays and the commutative property.  Below is an example of some story problems the students are being asked to solve during class.

Create a multiplication sentence to figure out the total number of racecars in this photograph.  Then create a repeated addition number sentence to represent the total number of racecars in this photograph.  Can you create another array for this total number of cars?

By the end of the race there were 7 fewer cars than shown in the picture still racing, how many cars were still racing?

During the race car #24 started the race by going 226 miles per hour (mph).  By the middle of the race he was going 47 miles per hour less.  At the end of the race he raised his speed 34 miles per hour faster than the speed he was driving at during the middle of the race.  How fast was he driving at the end of the race?

During the race driver Charlie drank 9 liters of water and his teammate Antonio drank 6 ½ liters of water.  How many milliliters of water did they drink together?  *One liter equals 1,000 milliliters.

The race track they are driving on is 10 miles around.  If racecar driver Amber completes 5 laps, how many miles has she traveled in her racecar?  If driver Sydney completes 8 ½ laps, how many miles has she driven?  If driver Julian has completed 14 laps, how far has he driven?  The race is a total of 20 laps.  How many more miles does each driver need to go in order to finish the race?

The champion of this race was car number #56.  The driver of car #56 was Ethan.  He finished the race in 1 hour 27 minutes.  How many total minutes did it take him to complete the race?  Ethan won $35,000.  After the race he had to buy four new tires.  Each tire costed $145.  Also, he paid his 8 pit crew members $900 each.  Ethan bought himself a brand new gold chain for $5,400.  How much money does Ethan have left from his winnings?
