Over the last couple of days the students have been working on creating numbers in different ways using base-ten blocks. For example to make the number 514 they could use 5 hundreds, 1 ten and four ones or they could use 4 hundreds, 11 tens, and 4 ones. Besides using these blocks the students are learning the difference between standard form, expanded form and written form. Below, I placed a task that the students were given today. Some students were able to complete this task and others will finish working on it tomorrow.

Use the base-ten blocks to fill in this chart. Choose your own number for the last two rows, but just make sure it is the same number.

Explain your thinking. What did you learn? How could you make a new way to make the number 103?
